Whale Shark Coloring Page

For parents & teachers
This whale shark coloring page shows the gentle giant of the ocean in profile, swimming toward the left. Its wide mouth, round eye, tall dorsal fin, two pectoral fins, and broad tail are all outlined for easy coloring, and the dotted pattern on its back and sides gives kids plenty of small shapes to fill in. The medium difficulty makes it a good fit for children ages 6 to 10 who are ready for more detail than a simple outline but not yet tackling very fine lines.
Coloring ideas
- Use a light blue or teal for the water and a darker blue for the whale shark’s back, then add white or pale yellow dots for the spots.
- Try a gradient on the belly, fading from soft gray to white, to show how the animal looks in real life.
- Add a few wavy lines or tiny bubbles around the mouth to suggest the water it filters as it swims.
- Color the fins in a slightly different shade of blue so they stand out from the body.
Quick fact and activity
Whale sharks are the largest fish in the ocean, reaching up to 40 feet long, yet they feed on tiny plankton by filtering water through their wide mouths. After coloring, ask your child to draw a small plankton or two near the mouth, then talk about how a filter feeder works. For a classroom version, print several pages and have students compare their spot patterns to see how many different designs they can create.
